Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) works slightly differently to other Search Engine Marketing disciplines in that SEO is aimed at achieving the highest position practically possible in the organic listings on the search engine results pages. In all search engines the Organic listings are on the left.

The advantage of SEO over paid search techniques is that there is no charge for organic listings to be displayed, nor is there a charge when a link to your site is clicked on.

However, investment is needed to employ the range of marketing/technical techniques required to actually make the website visible on search engines and directories. Once the website is visible ongoing work is required to maintain the rankings that the website has achieved.

The main advantage of SEO is that it is a relatively low-cost method to promote and market your website, as investment decreases as the results start to show. However, it is an investment in time, as it can take from three to six months to see the full results of optimising a website in this way.
